Top Medications Every ICU Nurse Should Know

In the ICU, medications can be the difference between life and death. Here are the essential drug categories every ICU nurse needs to know inside and out:

Vasopressors

• Norepinephrine (Levophed) — first-line for septic shock; increases BP by vasoconstriction
• Vasopressin — used as an adjunct to norepinephrine
• Dopamine — used for cardiogenic shock at higher doses

Sedatives

• Propofol — fast-acting, short duration; watch for propofol infusion syndrome
• Midazolam — benzodiazepine; useful for acute agitation
• Dexmedetomidine (Precedex) — light sedation that allows patient interaction

Analgesics

• Fentanyl — most common ICU opioid; titratable drip
• Morphine — used cautiously due to histamine release

Paralytics
